Presets replace the list with typical belongings. Beds exclude mattresses; mattresses are listed separately. Edit everything to match your load.

I know my volume
Enter the external packed volume of your belongings. This method cannot check individual furniture footprints.
Estimate from a vehicle load
Rough planning ranges, not a promise about a vehicle model. We use the upper range for space planning. This replaces the item estimate.
Vehicle cargo volume includes loading gaps. This method deliberately favours spare room. Payload and safe loading are separate issues.
Packing & access options
Saving is optional. Your inventory stays in this browser and is not sent to us.
Inventory floor packing: 86% efficient, 78% balanced, 66% loose. Access adds 0%, 15% or 35%. All estimates include 8% safety space.

Boxes stack; sofas usually do not
Strong, evenly filled boxes can form columns. An assembled sofa occupies its footprint even if there is empty space above it.
Dismantling changes the envelope
A bed frame packed into a bundle has less empty air inside it. We use explicit packed dimensions; mattresses remain separate.
Leave room to retrieve things
Regular access adds more space than a store-and-leave arrangement. Shape, doorway and safe aisle width still need checking.
Storage sizing questions, answered
How do I work out what size storage unit I need?
List the things actually going into storage, measure unusually large furniture, decide what can be dismantled and choose how much access you need. The calculator turns that inventory into a practical floor-area estimate and rounds up to a supported unit size.
Is 50 sq ft enough for a one-bedroom flat?
It may be enough for a light load, but it is not a rule. Large sofas, freestanding wardrobes, appliances and dozens of boxes can push the requirement higher. Load the one-bedroom preset, remove belongings that will stay behind and check the result.
Why does access change my recommendation?
A unit packed for one move-in and one move-out can hold more than a unit you need to visit regularly. We add 15% for occasional retrieval and 35% for regular access. Actual aisle width still depends on unit shape.
Can I use the height all the way to the ceiling?
Only where items and facility rules permit safe stacking. Our 2.4 m unit-height default does not mean a 2.4 m stack. Suitable boxes are capped at 2 m; careful stacking uses at most 1.2 m. Fragile furniture gets separate floor space.
Does this calculator rent storage or compare prices?
No. This is an independent sizing tool. You can use your estimate with any storage provider. No postcode, email address, booking or quote request is needed.
Can the result guarantee a fit?
No. Floor area and volume cannot prove that a sofa will pass through a narrow door or turn around a corner. Check actual internal dimensions, door clearance, pillars, safe stacking and your largest item before committing.
